Shimla,
overlooking the Jakhu, Prospect Hill, Observatory Hill,
Elysium Hill and Summer Hill, surrounded by apple
orchards and blessed with clement temperatures during
summer time was a logical choice of retreat for the
British army, where soldiers were sent to recuperate
from 1830 onwards. It grew in popularity and grew also
to resemble a little English village and finally in
1846, it was formally declared the summer capital of the
Imperial government where the officers would repair with
families, luggage and files from Calcutta and later
Delhi, every year. Shimla
figured at crucial moment of history with the Indian
government as well and today is the capital of the state
of Himachal Pradesh. |
