The city
of Kota is located on the east bank of the Chambal
River, Rajasthan's only perennial river. Kota is best
known for the traditional Kota Doria saris from the
neighbouring village of Kethun, finely woven saris in
cotton or silk often interspersed with delicate designs
in gold thread. It is also renowned for its detailed
miniature paintings, with vivid, descriptive depictions
of hunting expeditions that were popular in the once
thickly wooded forests in the area. The
rulers of Kota traditionally lived in the Palace that
was ensconced in the huge complex of the City Fort, that
also housed the royal treasury, courts, offices, arsenal.
