Often
touted as paradise on earth for its spectacularly
breathtaking beauty, the capital of Kashmir - the valley
of Srinagar - at the foot of the mighty Himalayas, with
its expanses of placid lakes, rapid rivers, rolling
meadows, immaculate flowering gardens, and the chinar
(maple) tree that reflects the changing seasons from the
fresh green of spring to the russets of autumn that are
shed for winter - tugs at the eyes and heart-strings of
the beholder. A
houseboat on a placid lake ringed by flowering trees is
by far one of the most attractive choices for
accommodation, setting the tone and pace for a visit to |

Area Information |
|
The
valley of Srinagar, is at a height of 1,730 metres,
cocooned by the great peaks of the Karakoram,
Zanskar and Pir Panjal ranges. It is the summer
capital (May - October) of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Jhelum river runs through the city and its
many sparkling lakes are filled with houseboats
and slender shikharas that ferry people across or
are often laden with overflowing baskets of
flowers gathered from the floating fields. The
mountain slopes are heavily wooded with deodar,
fir and pine, walnut, almond and cider, and its
forests harbour a rich fauna with rare mammals,
including the musk deer, wolf, red beer, black
bear and leopard, and birds including chakor,
partridge, wagtails, pheasants, herons, warblers
and doves.
The
summers are mild and pleasant with the
temperatures rarely crossing 30° and the city a
riot of colours with exotic blooms. The cold
winters bring with them snow and winter sports at
neighbouring Gulmarg.
Srinagar
is often clubbed with visits to Pahalgam and
Gulmarg.
