The hill
towns of Dharamashala and Mcleodganj, also known as
Upper Dharamsala, are on a narrow ridgeline of the
Dhauladhar range and the town ascends steeply up from a
height of 1,250 m to 1,750m. While Dharamsala has more
of traditional settlements and markets, the upper
reaches, the residence and headquarters of the Dalai
Lama, are more confined to spiritual pursuits. While
the town was founded by the British between 1815 and
1847, it was in the late 50's that with the influx of
Tibetan refugees along with the Dalai Lama, the
complexion of the town changed into a Mini-Tibet with
monastries and various other related organizations and
activities. |
