Overview_Balsamand_Lake_Palace_Jodhpur

home

Jodhpur, the erstwhile capital of the kingdom of Marwar, Rajasthan’s largest princely state, a city awash in hues of blue, dominated by the large, imposing and wonderfully preserved Meherangarh Fort that towers over the alternately sleepy and bustling city with its winding roads and teeming markets, is a popular destination for good reason.

A mere 5 kilometres north of the city limits of Jodhpur, on the Mandore Road, is the Balsamand Lake Palace, overlooking the still, clear Balsamand Lake. Built in red sandstone employing the typical ornate Rajput architectural style, it was initially conceived as the summer residence of the Jodhpur Majarajahs.

The lake itself, artificially created in the 13th century as a water reservoir that supplied drinking water to the city - now complements the lush green lawns and staggered, terraced gardens of the property.

This old royal retreat has now been fitted with all modern amenities which however does not take away from the old world charm of the property.

Accommodation

There are 10 palace suites, each different but similar in that they are spacious, well appointed, and brimming with charm. The wide patios or little ornate windows, the antique furnishings, the definition of separate spaces and niches with low arches, all echo the splendour of a rich and luxurious past and make for a stay of indulgent fantasy in the present.

Area Infomation_Balsamand_Lake_Palace_Jodhpur

Jodhpur, the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan after Jaipur, lies on the brink of the Thar desert, and its climate certainly follows the desert pattern of dry hot summers with soaring temperatures and at the other extreme biting cold winter nights. However, the evening temperatures in summer drop considerably and make nights much more tolerable and the winter sun makes for crisp, bright days. A fair amount of rainfall in the months of July and August ensures that the catchment areas in and around the city fill up and that the city is fairly green.

At the heart of the Marwar region, Jodhpur is also nodal to many places of interest in the region.
